Boarding & Ramming

vJuly 30

Crew-on-crew actions at 3", and Tonnage-driven collisions in base contact.

The Rule

Boarding requires both units to have CR, the target's SH to be 0, and the target within 3". Both players roll CR and compare successes; ties go to the defender. If the attacker wins, the defender takes HP damage equal to the difference (some factions may make a Dodge save). If the defender wins, the attacker is repelled.

Explanation

Ramming requires base contact. The ramming unit rolls dice equal to its Tonnage; each 5+ scores a hit. The defender makes a Dodge roll if applicable, and any hits left over are taken by both attacker and defender. These hits ignore Shields. If the target has moved 3" or more, ramming hits are scored on a 4+.

Example

A Tonnage 6 Cruiser rams and rolls six dice, scoring three hits on 5+; both ships take the undodged hits.

Frequently Asked Questions

The defender.

Can you board a shielded ship?

No — the target's SH must be reduced to 0 first.

Designer Commentary

Ramming hurts the rammer too — it should always feel like a decision made in desperation.
